Frequently Asked Questions Q: What is a professional organizer? A: Professional Organizers provide information, products and assistance to help others organize to meet their needs. A professional organizer should guide, encourage and educate clients about basic principles of organizing by offering support, focus and direction. Q: What can a professional organizer do for me? A: A professional organizer can provide ideas, information, structure, solutions, and systems, which can increase productivity, reduce stress, and create a newfound freedom and sense of being in control. Q: I’ve always been disorganized, is there really hope for me? A: Being organized is a skill, and like any other skill, it is possible to learn the basic principles and formulas of organizing. However, in order to experience long-lasting, life-changing results, a professional organizer can teach you how to maintain your systems on a regular basis, and assist and encourage you in practising the skills until they become habits. Q: Will a professional organizer make me throw out all my “stuff”? A: A professional organizer is a consultant who will ask questions, make observations and suggestions to help you decide what is or is not important to you. Ultimately you, the client, are the decision maker. Q: How long will it take to get me organized? A: There is no set answer, as each organizing project is different. Length of project will depend primarily on the size of your home or office, the amount of clutter and/or paper that has built up, and how quickly you can make decisions. At MST, when we come out to give you a quote we can generally give a good estimate of the total time involved in a specific project. Q: Does the professional organizer do the work or does he/she tell me how to do it? A: This is a personal decision based on your needs and budget. While some clients prefer working alongside their organizers others just need direction and an action plan to get them going. Q: How much does a professional organizer charge? A: Fees in Canada generally range from about $30 an hour to $200 an hour. This is based on your geographic location, the type of organizing service(s), and the experience of the organizer you are contracting. MST does not charge for an initial assessment, and will provide a no-obligation quote. It is a good idea to obtain a quote, as you may find that the job will take a lot less time than you think! In addition, MST can tailor the work (and thus the bill) depending on how much you feel able to do on your own between sessions. Q: Is the most expensive organizer the best? A: The best professional organizer for you is the one with the background, training and personality that suits you. It is important that you feel comfortable with the person with whom you will work closely. Q: Will my sessions with a professional organizer and my personal or business information be confidential? A: A POC (Canada) or NAPO (USA) professional organizer is aware of the high level of trust placed in them by their clients. They should never do or say anything to breach that trust. Integrity, honesty and confidentiality are guiding principles of both professional organizations. In addition, if you would feel more comfortable, many organizers, including MST, can provide a confidentiality agreement to be signed prior to commencing the project. Q. What are your specialties? A. Masters of Space and Time specializes in paper flow and information management for the office or home, as well as providing one on one time management consulting. Seminars and workshops on these topic areas are also available. Other organizers work in a variety of different areas - see the links to Professional Organizers of Canada and the US National Association of Professional Organizers to see what organizers are in your area and what kinds of work they do.
